Deep Frying Safety for Thanksgiving

Deep frying a turkey for Thanksgiving involves some planning for safety measures. Here is some tips to ensure that you stay safe in deep frying your turkey for the holiday season:

  1. Keep the deep fryer vat (container) away from the house and in an open area; not underneath any coverings. Ensure that it is on a flat level surface.

  2. Ensure you did not overfill the fryer container of oil; follow proper instructions. Reduce or turn off the flames while lowering the turkey into the oil in case any oil overflows out. The oil is flammable and can catch fire from the open flames.

  3. As you prepare the turkey before lowering it into the hot oil, ensure that it is completely thawed and dried. Any extra moisture will cause the oil to splatter over leading to potential fires.

  4. Truss the legs - this allows for an even cooking surface for proper cooking.

  5. Keep pets and children away from the cooking area.

  6. Do not allow anyone to play near the cooking area.
